Bear Oak (Scrub Oak)
Quercus ilicifolia

Unique, thicket-forming shrub with numerous gnarled stems, native to Massachusetts and most of the Northeastern USA. Attains only about 12-20 ft. at maturity. One of the most desirable species for naturalizing, it provides effective shelter and food for animals and birds, and also a preferred food source for a wide range of native butterfly/moth populations. Grows well in sunny, well-drained soils, highly tolerant of cutback, fire and pest infestations. Rarely offered for sale on the market.
